For the 2013 NBA Playoffs, my team at Turner Broadcasting worked with NBA Digital to create a billboard activation. Polling twitter to count specific hashtags, we displayed user votes larger-than-life on the nine screen billboard above the American Eagle building in Times Square.
The scale of this project was huge! Seeing the app on the side of an actual building animating in real-time was very exciting. I had to dust off my Adobe Flash hat for this build- the sign's software controller accepts only rendered video or Adobe Flash, so our usual modus operandi of modern web did not apply.
Using a combination of vectors, raster exports, MovieClips, and blend modes got me about 80% of the way there. The rest of the code was fairly simple- parse a JSON feed in ActionScript and call a few animate methods to move a MovieClip mask to simulate a vertical "painting" of the voting visualization.
